The first shipment comprised of 94 pallets and crates weighing 282 metric tons with 1,402 cubic meters of volume equivalent to about 35 forty-foot containers, which required 14 hard-to- find suspension trucks equipped to handle large loads. The second shipment was half the size and weight of the first.

Along the way, civil unrest and road strikes delayed the trucks as they were constantly blocked and stopped from entering the port. That led to the expiry of road permits and renewals were slowed by the Christmas holiday. To make up for the delay, Agility pre-alerted customs agents by transmitting the required documentation ahead to smooth the way for cross-border clearance from Chile into Bolivia. Detours were also taken through fields when bridges and small village roads proved too fragile for the massive loads.

The Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) was moved from Ellington Airport in Houston to Space Center Houston, where it will be mounted in the ferry configuration with a replica of the space shuttle Independence as part of a permanent exhibit expected to open to the public in 2015. Agility oversaw the transportation of 318,000 pounds of aircraft parts, the largest of which was the fuselage measuring 25 feet wide and 35 feet tall. The project required the use of seven different trailers moving along a pre-selected road that had been temporarily blocked off. Street lamps, traffic lights, and utility and power lines were moved or lifted out of the convoy’s path.

The convoy reached its final destination successfully and the aircraft is being reassembled at Space Center Houston. Read Less

Agility was named top-performing health-and-safety contractor, an especially important distinction given that the offshore site is also a “Grade 1” environmental heritage site, subject to strict regulations in terms of how freight is moved to and from the project. Every employee working on the project undertakes training on environment and safety, and each container, flatrack and trailer that goes to the island is pressure washed and fumigated, while many items of freight are shrink-wrapped to prevent the introduction of non-indigenous plant and animal species.
